Mens Fours Decided for 2024-25

Mens Fours Winners: Bryan O’Shea, Peter Cornish, Steve Wright and Stuart Nilsson.

The first club championship of the year was completed recently with the Men’s Fours final being completed on 29th September.

The final saw Bryan O’Shea teaming up with Peter Cornish, Steve Wright and Stuart Nilsson to take on recent arrival Chris Connor and his team of Jeff Bush, Greg Nelmes and Tony Hughes.

On the way to the final, Bryan’s team was lucky to survive the quarter-final when Ron Fleming’s team pushed them all the way to the line.  Chris’s team had an even closer match, picking up a single on the last end to win by 2 against “The Colonel” Kevin Laffey’s side.

The semi-finals were then played in very challenging conditions with strong, gusty, cold winds blowing throughout.  For the conditions, Tony Hughes showed great consistency as lead, sending down some clangers to help set up his side for a narrow two shot win over Adam Jones’s team.  Bryan’s team had a more straightforward passage to the final with a comfortable win against Col Cope’s team.

The final, by contrast, was played in comparatively good conditions.  Both teams started well, trading shots with some very tight heads, before Bryan’s team started to push away.  At the ten end mark they had a slim 11-6 margin, but disaster struck Chris’s team in end 11, with a big score allowing the O’Shea side to get away to a comfortable lead. 

From that point on, they never looked like being headed.  Every time Chris’s team held multiple shots that might close the gap, Bryan would cooly send down the absoluter and save the day.  In the end the team went on to close out a comfortable 28-12 win.

Both sides played some great bowls, but across the board the consistency of Bryan, Peter, Steve and Stuart’s play resulted in a deserved win.
